Unzip files on Windows 11
How to unzip files on Windows 11
For one ordinary ZIP, Windows already has the right tool. These are the built-in steps, followed by the three cases where File Explorer stops being enough.
Find the ZIP file in File Explorer
Open File Explorer and go to the folder containing the .zip file. Do not run a program from inside the ZIP; extract the archive first so every file it needs lands in a normal folder.
Choose Extract All
Right-click the ZIP and choose Extract All. You can also open the ZIP, then choose Extract All from File Explorer's toolbar. Both routes open the same destination dialog.
Choose where the unzipped files go
Accept the suggested folder beside the ZIP, or choose Browse and pick another folder. Keep Show extracted files when complete selected if you want File Explorer to open the result when it finishes.
Extract and check the result
Choose Extract and wait for the new folder to open. Check that the files you need are present before deleting the original ZIP. The ZIP remains unchanged until you remove it yourself.
When File Explorer is enough
Use the built-in flow for one normal ZIP when you want everything inside it. It costs nothing, installs nothing and leaves the original archive intact. Microsoft's currentZIP and unzip guidedocuments the same Extract All path.
When you need another tool
- The ZIP has a password. File Explorer does not handle encrypted archives. Use EasyUnZip, 7-Zip or WinRAR, and get the password from the sender.
- You selected several ZIP files. Extract All works through them one at a time. A batch tool can give each archive its own folder in one pass.
- You only need one file type. File Explorer can copy individual files, but it has no extension filter across nested folders.Follow the selected-file-types guideto extract only the JPGs, PDFs or other types you need.
EasyUnZip covers those three cases from File Explorer: select the archives, pressAltE, then choose the destination, enter each required password and choose the file types. It does not replace Windows for the easy case and does not create ZIP files.
If the ZIP still will not open
Keep the original and follow the ZIP troubleshooting checklist. It separates incomplete downloads, password problems and destination errors so you can choose the next step from the actual message instead of retrying blindly.
Windows documentation re-checked on 7 October 2026 against Microsoft'sZIP guidanceand KB5031455. The EasyUnZip workflow was previously checked against 0.1.1; no new Windows device test was performed for this documentation update.
Common questions
How do I unzip a file on Windows 11 for free?
With Windows itself. Right-click the ZIP, choose Extract All, set the destination and press Extract - there is nothing to install and nothing to pay for. WinRAR and similar downloads are only needed for the cases the built-in flow does not cover: passwords, batches and filtered output.
What is the difference between opening a ZIP and extracting it?
Double-clicking opens the archive so you can look inside; the files are still compressed and still in the ZIP. Extracting writes real copies into a folder. This is why a program run from inside a ZIP often fails - it cannot see the other files it needs, because they were never written to disk.
Why is Extract All missing or greyed out?
Check the file's actual extension and whether its download finished. Renaming a file to .zip does not turn it into a ZIP. For RAR, Windows 10 needs a separate tool; updated Windows 11 supports it, including 22H2 and 23H2 with the October 2023 update. An installed archive app can also change the available menu entries.
Can I unzip files on Windows 11 with a keyboard shortcut?
Not one Windows provides. Extract All has no default shortcut, and Windows offers no way to assign one to it. A tray utility can add a global hotkey over File Explorer - EasyUnZip uses Alt+E - but nothing in Windows itself does.
How do I unzip a file in Windows 10?
The same four steps. Extract All has been in File Explorer since Windows XP and behaves identically on Windows 10 and 11. The difference is what else Explorer reads: Windows 10 File Explorer has native ZIP support, while updated Windows 11 also reads unencrypted RAR, 7z and TAR archives.
Why does Windows say the ZIP is invalid or the folder is empty?
Most often the download did not finish, so the file is short and the directory at the end of it is missing - download it again before anything else. The other common cause is an encrypted archive: Explorer may list the names and then refuse the contents, which reads as empty rather than as locked.
